Some thoughts about items...
Spoiler! :
; 薬草
Herb[end-4]

Heals 50 HP.

.POINTER = $0108D4
; Offset: $010C7A

; 銅丹
Copper Elixir[end-4]

Heals 125 HP. I had this in my notes simply as "Copper Potion". My problem was with translating that 丹 kanji overall - I didn't come up with many good options. Elixir is definitely good and appropriate.

.POINTER = $0108D6
; Offset: $010C80

; 鋸丹
;Saw or Mend Elixir
Bloom Elixir[end-4]

Heals 300 HP. It's not an accurate translation, but I had this as "Silver Potion".

.POINTER = $0108D8
; Offset: $010C86

; 金丹
Gold Elixir[end-4]

Heals all HP.

.POINTER = $0108DC
; Offset: $010C8C

; 活丹
MP Elixir[end-4]

Heals 30 MP. I couldn't come up with accurate translations for these following few items, so I called this just as "Mind Tonic". My -Tonic suffix is not accurate, but I thought some general differentiation between HP and MP healing items might be of benefit.

.POINTER = $0108DE
; Offset: $010C92

; 玉丹
Red Elixir[end-4]

Heals 100 MP. As above, mine was "Bead Tonic". I don't find any translation of 玉 for 'red'.

.POINTER = $0108E0
; Offset: $010C98

; 仙丹
Sage Elixir[end-4]

Heals all MP.

.POINTER = $0108E4
; Offset: $010C9E

; 玄丹
Black Elixir[end-4]
;fixes poison, maybe more

Yes, this item does clear status effects - poison and paralysis, maybe sleep (haven't tried). I don't even recall where I came up with "Pure Sand" for this. Black Elixir surely is a more accurate translation.

.POINTER = $0108E6
; Offset: $010CA4

; 神丹
Deity Elixir[end-4]

This is the revive item.

Here's a few bits about the ending scene:
Spoiler! :
Dragon Sage: You dropped the
shoes. Pick them up, kid![end-2]

It's more like the Hero dropped his shoe(s) for the boy to pick up.

Dragon Sage: Wear them!
[end-2]

He instructs the boy to put them on Hero, not on the boy (the game's line is ambiguous, but this is according to the story).

Boy: I'm Jifang.
[end-2]

Boy: I'm Zifang.

I'm sure once you get ahead in the game, things will fall into place and the acquired nuance will introduce itself to refining scenes like this. So I wouldn't worry about it too much yet!

Is the puzzle this one? Wait until ya get to later dungeons, where you'll face 16x16 versions of this joy :lol:
Attachment:
songshan puzzle.png

The only escape item is 'Taxi Ticket' (lol, right) you'll get a few complimentary ones during the story later, and can buy them from Luoyang's gambling den when you have access to it.

EDIT: In the next mountain, there's a few more. Two or three appear to be selected at random for you. The first column is how to solve them going up the mountain, the 2nd column as you solve the same floors going down:

Hmm, I can't seem to paste the image... it says board attachment quota has been reached :mrgreen:
A current revised restorative item list for your review:

Spoiler! :
.POINTER = $0108D2

; Restores 50 HP

.POINTER = $0108D4

;Restores 125 HP

.POINTER = $0108D6
; Offset: $010C80

; 鋸丹
;Saw or Mend Elixir
Silver Elixir[end-4]
; Restores 300 HP

.POINTER = $0108D8

; 金丹

.POINTER = $0108E0

;Restores all HP

.POINTER = $0108E4

.POINTER = $0108E6

Deity Elixir[end-4]
;Resusitates unconscious teammates

As for the puzzle floor, that's the one, but my guy is locked on the Earth Kanji, How do I transfer him to the People Kanji?
I'm pecking away at getting back to Daliang and "re-everythinging" what I had already done, except re-formating for the final font. That's useful. On my second pass from the beginning I'll have much fewer delays fiddling with details. I'm at the boat landing in southwestern Yan, about to return to Luoyang.

Here's a question... All those swap-shop items... (Dried Plums - Shiitake - Wool Pants) What do I swap the pants for in Ji, the Fishing Rod or the あみ, whatever that is? The previous translator came up with "Net". I come up with a "Shrimp". A Japanese walk-through translation calls it a "Hairo" (Japanese overcoat). Where does this swap drill end? Is it just a convoluted side quest where maybe the final swap is something really worthwhile, such as the game's best weapon for someone? That would be worth it!

Thanks again for all your assistance!

The puzzle: i recall pressing b or select gave you a prompt to return back to the stairs. Then you can try again. Im not sure what the trouble seems to be? :?:

Ah the barter minigame! Hmm, i never did write down the order/locations. But the correct item is always the top choice. Lol, in my notes i called that item " shrimp net" :mrgreen:

That minigame is actually compulsory to finishing the game, you get a quest item in the end.

EDIT: That crazy alley geezer in Luoyang is the last one in the trade-chain. I have no idea how to translate some of those...starting from the first one, even ゲロリン is a mystery to me! I know gero refers to frogs but... yeah. I trust you have the rest covered!

I should elaborate a bit on that quest items part. There are five of these and each corresponds to an element. I'll spoiler-tag em since finding things is the fun part of a hunt - and you don't need em til much later anyway.
Spoiler! :
奇跡の水 Miracle Water
始まりの火 Holy Ember
文明の金 Primal Gold
生命の木 Branch of Life
恵みの土 Grace of Soil

Above translations are preliminary for these; they could use refinement. Locations are:
奇跡の水 - You get this automatically after solving the block puzzle in the cave south of Linzi.
始まりの火 - Solve the drought situation in the parched village southwest of Daliang.
文明の金 - Finish the swap-item sidequest.
生命の木 - You planted a seed at Chen's garden during his training. When you return there as an adult, you'll find this.
恵みの土 - Visit Grace village and talk to the brothers there late in the game.

The new font is great. I was gonna mention the weird d's and b's in the previous iteration but this solves everything.

The good thing about this game, depending on one's tastes, is how short it actually is. A lot of time is spent traversing the gigantic overworld. Finding the 3 mirrors and completing one additional dungeon related to that quest chain I'd say puts you at around half-point mark. When soon after you reach Xianyang it's a few events away from basically end-game territory.

Hey, Wildbill, whenever you feel back on your feet - wife approving! - do you happen to have a monster list to examine? The strat guide has a detailed monster section but I've noticed inconsistencies and incomplete information in there. It's missing several common goons and all bosses' stats. Not to mention, I'm gonna put a bounty on 殺人蜂 and 刺トカゲ that the guide claims to exist but I never encountered! I'm wondering if these two even exist in the code. Such nitpicks drive me insane.

And what's your letter limit on monster names?

Letter count is an imperfect science due to VWF. Secondly, a monster that uses qigong with long names runs out of battle message space quickly if it has a long name, also, and casts "Blizzard", for example. I'll just give you the whole "enemy" list, and you can make them what they should be. It's your baby! Bear in mind that the so-called "enemy" list includes friends and neutrals. A better nomenclature for this file would be "game characters" list.

I inherited most of these names from a previous translator. Mercenaries, BTW, must be limited to six letters. On the other names, the shorter the better, but 8-12 regular spaces is a good rule of thumb. Some foes I renamed what they look like. i. e. "Blue Fox" and "Red Tiger".

Thanks! A most interesting list. I have no idea what to call most of the bosses, their names are a bit strange. At this stage, there's no hurry trying to nail all of em down 100%. Just a couple quick suggestions for now:
Spoiler! :
.POINTER = $010148
; Offset: $010382

; 狐火
Firefly Swarm[end-4]

Taking into account its graphic it's supposed to be "Willowisp" or Will-o-wisp.

.POINTER = $01015E
; Offset: $0103CA

; 斉兵
Zhou soldier[end-4]

"Qi Soldier" :)

.POINTER = $010166
; Offset: $0103E8

; 斉兵長
Zhou Officer[end-4]

"Qi Officer" :)

.POINTER = $01016C
; Offset: $010404

; 斉将
Zhou General[end-4]

"Qi General" :)

.POINTER = $010172
; Offset: $010418

; 金鬼
Daemon[end-4]
;Gold Demon

Too bad the enemy graphic is plain white, so Gold Demon is bit of a miss. Metal Demon for an alternative?

.POINTER = $0101DE
; Offset: $0105A2

; 人食い熊
Man-eating Bear[end-4]

"Black Bear" also works and it's shorter.

.POINTER = $0101EE
; Offset: $0105DA

; 人食い魚
Man-eating Fish[end-4]

How about "Piranha"?

.POINTER = $01020A
; Offset: $010644

; 衛士
Guardsman[end-4]

You have two enemies named 'Guardsman'. This one could be "Guardian"?

.POINTER = $01021E
; Offset: $010686

; 秦将
Qin Soldier[end-4]

"Qin General" :)

.POINTER = $01023A
; Offset: $0106DE

; 九尾狐
Nine-tails Fox[end-4]

"Kitsune" might be better in short.

; 水蛇
Water Snake[end-4]

; 小鬼
Li'l Demon[end-4]

; 馬賊
Horse Thief[end-4]

I never encountered these guys in-game. I like the monster art, so I'm curious what kind of sprites they have. Though, if they ended up unused, they might not even have sprites programmed in.

EDIT: I was able to find a code to cycle thru monster groups (7e1810xx) which led to finding Killer Bee and Thorn Lizard sprites. That's cool. Those other three and their locations, if any, are still unknown to me. This is where my technical skill reaches its limit and I have no idea how to deduce a way to view them. Lol.

BTW: Just a tip in case you hadn't spotted it Wildbill. I noticed in your video you always used the menu to talk to folks. You can do it without the menu. Just use (was it x or y). Anyway, there is a button that lets you directly talk and another to directly search without going into the menu.

Force of habit with the menu...

Just have a little time this evening, but this is the toughest scene in the game for me to understand so far, and this is a critical question about it...

Spoiler! :
What is this? 和氏の壁. My preliminary translation calls it some sort of Wall. It has to do with Qin wanting to swap castles with Zhao (15 castles?). King Zhao is rattled. Pingyuan thinks it's a trap. Zheng, the Crown Prince of Qin (nephew to the hero), suddenly leaves the group. The group's headed to Zianyang soon anyway and needs to climb Huashan Mt. for the Damascus Sword. What's going on with this Wall object Pingyuan gives the hero? Is it a pass through the Hangu Pass mountain checkpoint west of Luoyamg that leads to Qin?
