In self-translating, the machine system is a starting point.
1. Start with a machine translator.
2. Run it through the Breen site, whole and partially. Take notes.
3. Go to NJStar for Kanji radical lookup. Find them individually and paste them onto a new document, then run the built-in dictionary to scan all the possible usages. Take notes.
4. Paste Kana and Kanji into a search engine geared to Japanese sources. Look at your hits. You may see your game! You may even find a Japanese website dedicated to your game. Translate the whole site, find your term, and see what it's associated with in the game. It may even include a translated definition.
5. If you don't find a games site hit with your term, paste some of the hits into Option #1. See how your term is used in association with accurately translated Japanese. Take notes.
6. Pull up other games' Japanese files already translated. Paste your term into the search feature in EditPad. Run the search through various blocks. You may get a complete or partial hit, and maybe your answer.
7. Compare all your notes and refine something game-related or put a unique code in the insertion.
8. When you get a working alpha, see if the term has a description in a shop or on a menu. If so, you'll have your final answer.
