Well, I finally beat the game a couple of days ago. It's a very good game, but some of the design choices are questionable (like that encounter rate...I mean, I can deal with lots of encounters, back to back, but toward the end of the game the encounters were such that it felt like the designers intentionally made the enemies stronger to whittle down your party, bit by bit, and this despite the fact that everyone in my party was at max level). Yeah, I've read about the "no encounter" cheat code, but sometimes cheat codes can adversely affect the game, so I avoid all cheats while testing games. There's still a few questions left unanswered (for me), so I'll probably plug in that code later :)

The dual-party system was interesting and very well done. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that the designers actually HID necessary switches/doors BEHIND graphics. I was stuck the first time, wondering why the door wouldn't open when I was standing on both switches, then I realized almost an hour later that the corresponding switch was behind some graphics...grr. Aside from that, it's a refreshing change, as it's different from most rpg's of that time.

There's also a lot to do in the game (like the town you can customize), and there's quite a few hidden surprises in the game as well (like that barrel in Port Marinela...must check it later), and the Time Ruins. While on the subject of the Time Ruins, it wasn't until I made it to the middle of the game that I figured out HOW to actually enter the Ruins: you have to press 'A'. My mistake was that I was simply following the directions, as stated, but that's not enough (you HAVE to press 'A' or nothing happens). The Time Ruins were a nice side-quest, and, thankfully, they didn't overdo it. I was hoping it didn't turn into another 'Animal Crossing'. Don't get me wrong...I love 'Animal Crossing'. What I don't like is the fact that too many things in 'Animal Crossing' take place at very specific times, and only for a limited time, so if you don't play the game at the right time, you end up missing out. In the end, I ended up doing what's known as "time travelling" in AC (Animal Crossing), but that's mainly because SO MANY things require that you play at specific times, including the holidays. I mean, can you picture that? My family and friends are gathered for X-mas, and I say, "Excuse me for a bit, I have to play AC to unlock the Santa outfit." I...don't think so. Anyway, here there were only a handful of time-specific side-quests, so it was perfect (except for that last one, you'll have to read my to-be-uploaded-soon final report for that one).

Overall, it was fun playing this game, so thanks, Dynamic Designs! Even though it may not be a perfect release, it's very much playable without any major problems. While on that subject, I did find a few minor issues, which I'll be uploading a little later (life's been really hectic lately, what with work and the pandemic). There's probably, oh, two or three additional reports, and I should be able to get those done in the next few days. Well, off to work...just wanted to post an update.
Very interesting and helpful update! If you did not encounter garbled text and did not use cheats or save-states, looks like you just answered a burning question. Anyway, you are the first to report finishing the game. Thanks again!

Sorry about the late reply...long day at work. Hmm...there WAS one instance of garbled text during the ending sequence, but I did use save states. In order to eliminate the possibility of the save state use causing the garbled text, I loaded a save from a point closest to the final boss. I did get the "PLG Error" message, so I reset the date and time, saved my game at the save point, then exited from the emulator. I started the emulator again and my save loaded properly (with no errors), so I continued to fight the final boss (this time, without any save states). Unfortunately, the garbled text still persists during the ending. It is only one line by Dr. Spanner.

If you think it's necessary to beat the entire game without using ANY save states at all, let me know and I'll go through it again from the start. Before I do that, though, I need to get these last few reports done. Oh, and that garbled line during the ending will also be included, though it may already be known.

Okay, it's back to the reports for me, then.

Not necessary to replay pristinely. That would be overkill. The Spanner line, I hope, will be a simple overlooked formatting fix. I’m pretty sure PLG errors are save-state related, but these are easily re-set. A long time ago, some people speculated the clock and timing feature might not work using a patch. You proved once again it can.

Added one final report (#18) detailing new issues found.

*Edit: 07/18/2021
Added last two reports (15 & 16).

*Edit: 01/01/2021
Happy new year! Sorry for the longer delay in finishing, but I'm about four days into a cold, so I haven't been feeling well. On top of that, I had to work the last two days of the year. Anyway, final report uploaded, link below!

*Edit: 12/29
Only finished one report, as I've been feeling sick all day. Tomorrow's a new day, though! New link below.

*Edit: 12/28
Got the next two reports done (links below), I should be able to finish the last two tomorrow.

Well, finally got a few days off so it's time to continue! I hope everyone had a merry X-mas with friends and family. I finally finished going over all my game snapshots, so I wrote up a couple of reports today. In order to keep all links on the same page, I'll copy-paste the links to the first four reports here:

First, Happy New Year to all! Finally finished the last of the reports, and all links are in the post above. If there's any questions/comments regarding any of the issues noted, let me know. The game is, overall, lots of fun. After finishing the second game, I now want to play the first one (though that will have to wait...I need to rest and recover from this cold, haha).

Great work on the translation, everyone! It's playable from start to finish with no crashes at all, and it's nice to finally be able to play both games in the series in English.

Thanks again, and may 2021 be a better year for everyone.

Happy New Year to you, too!

Your report confirms that releasing the patch was the right decision.

You played it twice in a row! Wow! Only a few long RPGs I've ever played compelled me to do the same game back-to-back immediately. One was Dragon Warrior-IV (NES)

SSMS-II has secrets and (legitimate) hacks for harvesting amazing "anything". Here are a few I picked up at a Japanese website that I exploited liberally during my third play about 5 years ago. If I recall correctly, the Angel Medal trove was available only during a certain earlier phase of the game.

Did you find any of these?

Spoiler! :
Some of the small islands off the snowy continent in the north on the world map present a high probability for encountering Steel Bugs and and harvesting Angel Medals and valuable Gold Armor (for selling), gaining high EXP, and earning Pearls. Shamil's Cat Punch beats the Steel Bug easily by striking the lightning attribute of the weak point. This is maybe the best Pearl-earning battle in the game. Shamil steals Angel Medals from Steel Bugs quite easily.

However, during the period these opportunities may be exploited, Dragobird's growth is important prior to the darkening of the world. Meanwhile, on the ice-covered islands, using Catnip may enable Shamil to steal more than one Angel Medal from the Steel Bugs. Defeating two Steel Bugs in the same battle awards the upper limit of experience possible in the game.

Items that may be obtained only from enemies.

Dogs in a My Town construction will tell Robot about the Dragon Fang and Gigant Sword.

A Shamil dedicated dagger, Black Rider, may be dropped by a "fixed enemy" (Boss?) on the upper side of the sacred ground of the floating continent. Since the opportunity to obtain it occurs only once, this makes Black Rider probably the rarest item in the game.

Hi, Wildbill! Regarding the hidden items, I specifically recall seeing an enemy with Angel Medals, but I couldn't steal them because Shamil wasn't in my party (the only reason I knew the enemy was carrying an Angel Medal was because of Rumiella's Magic Eye skill). At first, Shamil was always in my party, but I had to backtrack several times to switch her out for Urnie (because of a summon jar in that dungeon), so I reached a point where Urnie was always in my party. The Giganto Sword I was able to steal, though I never did see any enemy who had the Black Rider or the Dragon Fang. I'll have to keep an eye out for them in my next playthrough. Oh! That reminds me...I think I need to clarify what I typed yesterday. When I typed "After finishing the second game, I now want to play the first one", I meant that after beating SSMS 2, I want to play the first one, not that I had played through SSMS-2 twice. I think I was busy at the time D-D released SSMS-1, so I had to skip that one, unfortunately. You know something, though? I AM going to start another game, and this time without any save states/external programs that level up my party while I'm away. To be honest, I didn't really like the way I played through the game the first time, mainly due to time constraints. I always felt like I HAD to hurry, that I wasn't making enough progress. Things are slower now, so I'll plod through the game at a more leisurely pace (and this time I can keep an eye out for some of those hidden items).

If I happen to run into any other issue I may have missed, I'll be sure to let you know. The game is huge, surprisingly so! When I first started playing, I only expected my first game to last around 30-40 hours, but I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up being double that amount. There's lots of equipment for everyone to equip, and there's quite a variety of accessories.

I'm about halfway through my second game and I've noticed a few more issues I missed the first time. Though this report is on the small side, at least the board won't be cluttered up with lots of snapshots.

Here's the link:

Report 11: https://www.mediafire.com/file/3e080m4j ... Report+11+[F8C3045E].zip/file

I'm making good progress through the game, though leveling up is very slow. Thankfully, there's certain enemies in the latter half of the game that make leveling up less painful. I'll write up another report if I notice anything else.
