So, I thought I'd do a list of Famicom RPGs and adventure games which were translated up to this point. It's largely based on Garret's list, with some additions and changes. Perhaps this list is gonna help some folks out (haven't noticed any list like that on the site, but I might've missed it). I'm not 100% sure if all of them can be considered RPGs or adventure games, but oh well. If anyone knows whether any patches for the untranslated games are in the works, it would be good to mention it here, so as to update the list further on. :)

Very cool! You may want to consider looking at Melville's Flame. Also, looks like Ginga Densho was done by Chris M. Covell.


The Devil takes notes from Lina Inverse? That sounds about right.

Thanks! I looked up some more hack/translation authors in the meantime. Melville's Flame seemed to be more of a strategy RPG from what I checked, but I'll research it some more, perhaps it's veering more towards RPG. I didn't include Mito Koumon games here either, since they're more like Ganbare Goemon than a typical RPG from what I remember (they do have a lot of text though). I think that some of the others are in the works, but I am not sure which ones at this point. Either way, there's still some good stuff left! 8-)

Tiime for an update - KingMike released Indora no Hikari and plans to release Akuma-kun very soon, so I added them both to the list of completed RPG games. :) So, that's two more down! I also added some info on remakes/newer versions of certain games.

Btw, I wonder if anyone looked into Dungeon Kid for the Famicom? It has a very cool soundtrack, for one, but the most fun feature is the map editor. I guess you could even consider it a very early proto-RPG Maker of sorts. I don't think there were any FC RPGs which allowed the player to create his own scenarios, so this is quite unprecedented. I played some of it, and it doesn't seem to have a large script at all for an RPG.

Looked at, yes. Done any work on, no. It's kind of on my radar. Best I could do is dump and translate the script of course. Someone else would need to insert.

It's curious that quite a few of those RPGs use the licenses they're based on in a really zany fashion. Take that Outlanders game for example, or Hokuto no Ken 4 (which is a side story of sorts). Some were more faithful to the source material though, I'd say!

I noticed on your site that you're looking for some people to test some projects/help with proofreading? I was actually interested in helping, if possible. I know a bit of Japanese myself, but I'm far from fluent. Still, I will gladly lend a hand if need be! :)

I looked at Dungeon Kid many years ago (and released compression tools as I recall).
One big problem is that, as I recall, text (at least the menus) were not stored normally but as 16x16 tile definitions (I think "metatiles" is the term people use?)
Also, it would probably be nice to hack the SRAM format to allow longer names (as I recall the game stored two tiles for each character, both the character and the accent. Since accents aren't needed in English, it would probably be nice to mod that to allow twice as many English characters).

Akuma-kun does have one major bug that turned up as I was writing the readme, which might be tricky to track down as it doesn't seem to apply in all situations. Calling Pixie (and seemingly only Pixie) into the party (from the Select menu on top-down areas) freezes the game if done at the start of the game, but doesn't freeze if I call it in my end-game password save. (I released a beta patch and the final password if anyone wants to try them out, on the RHDN forum on my project thread. But the RHDN forum seems to be having some downtime now. I can get as far as sometimes viewing the forum list, but not any actual posts.)

I sent a dump of the Hokuto 4 script to DarknessSavior years ago (I think he said he was a big Hokuto fan), but I assume he's been busy with real life since I haven't heard anything.

Chris Covell translated Ginga Denshou? I have not heard of him making a translation patch. I've had one sitting around that I had been woefully negligent on finishing (a decade) :( . I believe it was somebody else who translated it though. oacat, I think.
I probably got lost or something. I do recall using a bit-packing compression (the "Ghost Lion" method) but could only use it on some text since on others (such as the main menu), it is far too slow and the game glitches up.

I believe that Dungeon Kid is largely composed of menu text. It comes with a pre-loaded mission, which seems to have literally a few lines of story. It would seem that they wanted the players to create their own stories instead, not surprisingly.

I checked your Akuma-kun patch - this bug stopped happening to me right after I grabbed Corkscrew in that cave near China. I don't know if anyone has mentioned that to you yet. As to the script itself, I guess it could use some touch-ups, but it's understandable anyway, especially considering that it was written so long ago. :)

And yeah, Chris Covell released that patch in 2015 I think - he also wrote a really handy guide for that game. He probably uploaded it to GameFAQs as well, haven't checked...

By the way, are you thinking about adding the adventures (They can be visual novels too) on the FDS? I'd say both these adventures and general RPGs on both Famicom/FDS lists up here can appeal to the same gamers. I am interested in the FDS adventures.

Cleopatra no Mahou is apparently being worked on; DvD posted a post looking for someone to translate the manual. I guess it's probably largely done - I remember trying it out a while ago, and it seemed like a reaaally short game - especially compared to the later Square's efforts (such as Final Fantasy). As far as the RPGs go, it would be great to see the second Ganbare Goemon Gaiden game translated, and perhaps Ginga no Sannin and Monster Maker. Still, there are some more interesting RPGs left for SNES. 8-)

That's a good point, I'll have to look more into the text adventure genre. :) I know there are some good games left (Metal Slader Glory and Time Twist in particular), but I'll have to do some research to make a complete list. I'll probably just add them below the RPG list, since there are lots of them as well. There are way, way fewer of them for the SNES though.
