I tend to like to post a list of music I like listening to in the hope I may run across more people I've yet to hear that aren't mainstream and/or aren't that well known. I guess I should also put up a warning that I have a tendency to prefer slower/more emotional stuff(although I do have a small number of tracks which are just fun to listen to :P), preferably those that have either interesting lyrics/thoughts(Moby/Laura Veirs/Tom Waitz come to mind, even if their execution isn't for the casual listener.) or just a nice voice to listen to(A fair number of japanese artists fall under this, even if I only understand maybe 30% of what they say xD;)

I should also note that I may need to upgrade this list sporadically, ~_~; my old laptop died and took about... 30 gigs of music ranging from random video game osts(of which I really really miss my Chrono Cross ost... ;-; ) to artists I really like and are relatively rare(CAGNET)

I'm hoping for a nice simple format of Artist->Reason I like them + an example of the music they produce.

Christina Perri -> Lovely voice + really interesting lyrics. I love the fact that she doesn't try to show off a huge vocal range but rather sticks to a style of music that suits her voice. Doing a large number of covers is a plus as well for those that dislike her original stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNsZVO6Yy0k&ob=av2e

Martina Mcbride -> Ran across her by accident wondering around the net looking for more music. (before someone berates me for not knowing her, I'm not American :P I don't get to listen to country music that often) Gotta love her voice and the style of music, much like others on my list, I do like that she uses songs as a way to convey emotions and thoughts on serious topics as well as entertainment.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsJn-nsXTI4

Pat Benatar -> She's fun to listen to, she occasionally runs over to actually saying something interesting to boot. Mostly though, it's because she's a classic and fun to listen to xD;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRbXMWYMNno

Allison Krauss -> I'm unsure if she even releases anything of her own, but her record of winning a LOT of grammies(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_aw ... son_Krauss -> 26 out of 38 nominations~) pretty much speaks for the quality of her voice. What really sold me though was her compilation album between her and Robert Plant. Easily one of my most played albums.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7a85yBt4Wk

Joan Osborne -> Never really searched for more of her stuff, I was quite taken with her song "One of Us" though, sadly, everytime I tell myself I should go find more of her stuff, I tend to find something else to do... Still, the song itself is wonderful in my opinion.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZEO1Lug25s

Steve Conte -> Ran across em actually due to being interested in a different artist. Never regretted the decision of finding more of his stuff though, his voice has a pretty magical tone to it, his own works(the example I gave is a colab between him and a well known Japanese composer, Yoko Kanno) have a charm to them (they tend to be a bit more upbeat than what Kanno does ;P) that he doesn't really show off here.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peLlO1UCy6A

Maaya Sakamoto -> <3 one of the people I can blame for my rampant love of Record of Lodoss War, she's got a fair number of songs I enjoy in addition to them but Umi no Kiseki has and probably always will carry a special place in my heart. Personally she's one of my favorite Japanese artists for some odd reason.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ux90A4YDLdo

Kokia -> She's got pretty insane range and good control. Pity most of her songs don't take advantage of that...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tehrLcmRMwA
As an extra, here's dandelion which just made me scratch my head since she sings with practically no background music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k44LAvUWW8Y

Probably a lot more people I can dump here, I just can't recall em off the top of my head at the moment hmm... Possibly VG stuff too if anyone cares about that :P We'll see as we go along.

Oh yes, in case it's not apparent, feel free to chime in with anything else you want from any genre, post what you love listening to, not what you think we/I'd enjoy. Part of the fun of life is clashing points of view on things we're passionate about, be it games, music or anything else for that matter particularly if this leads us to a greater appreciation of a something we've never considered before.

My favorites include baroque, classical, romantic, country, and RPG themes.

In regard to country, I particularly enjoyed viewing again The Coal Miner's Daughter the other night, starring Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones, a biography of Loretta Lynn. All of her music - especially the duets with Conway Twitty back in the day (none of which were featured in the movie) - really cheer me up and get my juices pumping.

Here's Conway singing Hello Darlin' to Loretta: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ej9Dqhe5p4

I have also enjoyed radio personalities through the years. I listened to the Greaseman in two cities I have lived in - WAPE in Jacksonville, Florida and DC101 in Washington, D. C.

Here's some classic Greaseman at his best: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2Iw4P_4ZTw

My all-time favorite line about people's preferences in music is based on a remark in the Blues Brothers movie, in which one of the main characters asked the proprietress of a bar what sort of music they played.

Ellwood: "Exactly what kind of music do you have here?"
Bar owner's wife: "Oh we've got both kinds honey, country and western!"

Hee-hee... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdR6MN2jKYs

Here's a really strange track that conveys a mesmerizing sketch of American history before the TVA drowned half of Tennessee in lakes.

I Am A Man Of Constant Sorrow - Soggy Bottom Boys http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08e9k-c91E8&feature=related

Most RPG music I find enjoyable. I especially enjoy the long Staff Roll in Lennus-II. Various pieces from this game's soundtrack won awards in Japan.

My favorites from the baroque period includes G. F. Handel, J. S. Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, and G. P. Telemann.

Here's a Vivaldi my own son performed at the Lincoln Center in NYC about two years ago, as a concerto competition winner. All three tracks total about 10 minutes - in three movements (Allegro-Andante-Allegro) - the Bassoon Concerto in E Minor, RV 484. It's a raw wave recording. For uninterrupted listening, some may need to allow time for a sizable chunk of a the file to download.

Favorites from the Classical period include W. A Mozart, C. M von Weber, F. J. Hayden, and L. V. Beethoven
Favorites from the Romantic period include Johann Strauss II and P. I. Tchaikovsky

Finally, a duet same son did with a cellist friend at a summer music festival in New England last summer,
Mozart's Sonata in B-flat Major, K292 (Allegro-Andante-Rondo)

This track has a few minor dropouts due to capture from live streaming - mainly in the vocal intro by son, Tommy.

I listen to a wide variety of rock and techno. Lately, I've mostly been listening to the following list of some all-time favorites:

Rock-ish
The Fratellis (ex. A Heady Tale)
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (ex. Beat the Devil's Tattoo, Conscience Killer, Shuffle Your Feet)
Dirty Pretty Things (ex. Doctors and Dealers)
Flogging Molly (ex. Within a Mile of Home)
Collective Soul (ex. Georgia Girl, New Vibration)

Techno-ish
The Prodigy (ex. Omen)
She (ex. Coloris)
808 State, specifically their Gorgeous album; don't like the others as much (ex. One in Ten)
Republica (ex. Drop Dead Gorgeous)

Transitory favorites include Danko Jones, The Hives, Loreena McKennit, DJ Champion, Anamanaguchi, Luca Turilli, Kasabian, God Lives Underwater, Clutch, and Information Society.

Jon Fratelli just put out a new solo album, and The Cars have a new album out too; they're both good, but I haven't listened to either enough to decide whether I want to continue listening to them. Fratelli's new one ("Psycho Jukebox") isn't as good as either of the prior albums, but it's certainly better than his other solo project ("Codeine Velvet Club").

Heh, lots of different tastes here, but music is like that, it's very personal. My tastes are heavier than a lot of stuff here (metal/industrial/darkwave), but I also like a lot of mellow rock, pop, and techno/pop. The other day I made a Youtube countdown of 99 songs from 84 artists that I listen to (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLCCBCD4A970FCF6B1), a mix of US and Japanese artists (some other nationalities, German, Korean, etc... for good measure). It's in reverse order from least favorite (but still awesome) to most. If you want to know my musical tastes just listen to that.

I think our tastes couldn't be more different but some highlights and things OP *may* be interested in:

Kotoko is just amazing. This is her performing a heartfelt Chi ni Kaeru during (I think her first tour) in 2004:
http://youtu.be/CepEEXifPrs

An amazing heartfelt performance of Kaze ni Fukarete by Elephant Kashimashi:
http://youtu.be/IHLSdTpqm1E

Nanase Aikawa, still awesome after more than a decade:
http://youtu.be/TRNld9eoqdI

Yousei Teikoku in my favorite aspect which is their slow ethereal stuff, though their heavy stuff is great too:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1A49yyzee0

Of course ZARD. RIP Izumi Sakai. She was a beautiful person and singer:

BTW: I forgot to mention, that is cool that you listen to Republica Gideon. One of my friends likes them a lot (and Garbage) and I've heard them a lot. Fun stuff. I didn't know they did a second album though. It was never released in the US apparently. I don't know why since the first one seemed like it was super popular back in the day.

The Devil takes notes from Lina Inverse? That sounds about right.
