How well do the Intel Core i3 processors compare to the Intel dual core 2 and the Athlons? I saw some deals with this chip in my price range and from what I understand it is slightly better than the dual cores. I'm also seeing Intel Pentiums on models that are usually a little more expensive than those previous 2 processors but I thought the Pentium processor was weaker.

So is this the order of strength i7 > i5 > i3 > Dual core 2 > Pentium? Not sure where the Athlon dual core would fit. This is so much more complex than it used to be :?

Btw, I was looking at this laptop and using the special for a printer.

On the Toshiba now... That is indeed a deep discount for the features. If TF vouches for the CPU, I'd say grab it if the taxes don't chase you off. You might want to read the reviews on a similar Toshiba unit at Amazon. Most really bad reviews can be taken with a grain of salt, but the part about fingerprints on the body sort of caught my attention. I have a Dell that gets all "fingerprinty"! I fuss about it some, but it's really no big deal. As for reviews, you'll always hear someone say they'll never buy another Dell, Toshiba, Compaq, etc. You generally never hear that about an HP. As for me, I'll never buy another Asus laptop (not to be confused with an Acer laptop) Finally, about the only big difference I can tell between the BestBuy Toshiba unit and the similar Amazon Toshiba unit is the 500 GB HDD.

Edit #2 - This one-day deal just popped up, saves $60 today only, but you still pay shipping: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?InvtId ... anEProduct

Just to update, I'm mainly waiting for the Black Friday deals and debating whether I should show up to one of the Black Friday events at Best Buy. I've never gone to one before, I wonder if I should show up at 1 or 2 in the morning. The HP computer looks good and the $150 off any Samsung computers seems like a good deal. I also saw a $29 printer. I hope its not too cold that night though if I go. :o

I also saw this laptop on Amazon and it looks like a great deal especially considering I get free shipping, no tax and probably at least a $25 gift certificate from Amazon. I know its above my price range but it seems very tempting. Is there something I'm not seeing on why this is so cheap.

How do these deals look to everyone?

I don't know much about laptops so I can't really comment, but I do agree completely with Wildbill on P4s.
I consistently had heating problems with it and other odd behaviors through and through. Only thing that
seemed to solve it was downclocking it, which of course isn't all that beneficial.
I figure the whole deal with HT technology was something quite flaky and not widely tested, just a stopgap before
true multi cored processors started to invade the market.

I'd rather spend more to have a system that could deliver reasonable power on a stable functoning margin,
so I'd steer clear of P4's completely, unless you have a pheonmenally good airflow and cooling system;
in which case it is probably being wasted on said processor.

Here is the best bargain I've seen in a while, with free shipping that has DVD brrning at this price.
The only drawback is it's not a Core Duo or better Intel, or a loaded Athlon.

These won't last long.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone, I actually bought a new laptop on Monday. I bought it from Amazon when there was an additional discount on it and took advantage of the free shipping, no tax and got a $25 gift certificate from my credit card. It cost me a little over $600 and is very similar to the Acer I showed you earlier but a bit cheaper. Its a little more expensive than I planned but it should also last me a little longer than the other laptops too.

Its an Acer Aspire 5742-7653 with an Intel i5-460M Processor, 4gb memory and a 500 gb hard drive.

That's a nice unit, the Acer, with a fast, modern CPU. I grabbed one of the Toshiba's for a son's Christmas. He's got a stiffer budget, and it's a lot better than his old, slow Vista clunker that locked up when he tried to compress his C:\ directory!

The killer is that Compaq built this P.O.S(hinola) laptop from the chassis up to be supported by Vista only and will not support XP drivers for that model at its web site. Gates was gonna force that lemon Vista OS down our gullets no matter what, at the time. I have experimented extensively with XP, but certain proprietary aspects regarding this Compaq make it unworkable attempting to "downgrade" OS's. I know I could bump it up to Win7 for about $75 bucks, but by the time I spruce it up a bit more (larger HDD and more RAM), I might as well grab the newer and faster Toshiba for my son.

It was a sensible choice, although I don't think 7 is quite polished enough yet as a OS, it won't fail like Vista did.
